Explore Aviation Summer Camp 2019
Are you a teen who has what it takes to leave ordinary behind? If you do, then NAV CANADA’s Explore Aviation Summer Camp is made for you!
With the success of last year’s inaugural camp, NAV CANADA is announcing the second edition of the Explore Aviation Summer Camp for teens. Last summer, 30 students attended the first edition of the camp and it was an experience they described as “awesome” and “one of the best weeks of my life”.
“For me the interesting part is that you get to see the layers of aviation. We would say ‘there’s the pilot, there’s the person in the tower’ but there’s so many people in between and there’s so many career opportunities. I feel that I can go anywhere,” explained camper Monica Muresan who attended the camp last year."
This summer, 24 young women and 24 young men entering Grade 10 high school (or secondary 4 in Quebec) from across Canada will gather in Cornwall, Ontario. Their mission: one week of learning, fun and friendship with a focus on aviation. This all-expenses-paid camp uses hands-on learning to give you the chance to explore exciting careers that will empower you to soar to success after graduation!
Who can apply: Teens going into Grade 10 or secondary 4 in September 2019
Where: NAV CENTRE, Cornwall, ON, with day trips to Montreal and Ottawa
When: Young women: July 14-19, 2019
Young men: August 11-16, 2019
Cost: No cost to you! It’s paid for by a NAV CANADA bursary, which includes flight, room and board for the week
Why: To inspire you to explore a career in aviation

App Design Competition - Active Mental Health Initiative
The Hamilton Chapter of "Active Mental Health Initiative" (AMHI) is organizing a symposium called "Apps, Activity and Wellbeing Interdisciplinary Symposium” in collaboration with w. Booth school of Engineering, McMaster University at CIBC Hall, McMaster on November 24, 2018 from 11am to 4pm. The vision of the Symposium is to spread awareness of the role of physical activity in promoting mental health.
In addition, we are holding a competition for high school and university students, in which they have to come up with an innovative idea of a smartphone application on physical activity, which would be sustainable in promoting behaviour change based on the people’s perception of positive mental health with physical activity. For instance, take a happy face selfie after physical activity and the happy face shows up as a reinforcer before the reminder for physical activity next day. It will encourage the high school students to use their creativity to come up with different ideas for apps involving physical activity, human touch and behavioral change. This competition is an initiative to promote physical activity and mental health via technology.
The competition will be online and the registration forms are out. Deadline has been extended to Nov 10, 2018. All high school students are eligible to apply. They can apply in a team of 2-5 using the google form link below:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd8dF2pZUQrd0bAi-Asgisg9XR3J7HvaXf2aexkxx-IWwNNxw/viewform
They can also register at www.activementalhealthinitiative.com
Once they register and pay the registration fees of $10/team, they will be emailed the app competition package with all the details of the competition. Judges will be renowned Faculty from McMaster. All participants will present their idea at the symposium and awards will be presented there. The awards include $100(First award),$50(second place) and $25(Third place). In addition, there will be bonus prizes and all participants will receive a certificate of participation from w. Booth school of engineering. If you have any questions, email me at ishaan228@gmail.com

University of Toronto: Student Entrepreneurship and Mentorship Opportunity
The Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) is a program for early-stage massively scalable, science-based start-ups. Since its launch in 2012, over 1,000 founders representing more than 500 companies have participated in the program. The successful commercialization of cutting-edge science achieved through the program has led to the creation of over $3 billion in equity value.
In tangent, CDL runs a High Schools Girl Program which invites female high-school students who are ambitious and curious about entrepreneurship, technology, or science-based innovation. Students will have the opportunity to meet and observe a series of small group meetings with early-stage start-ups followed by an afternoon of a large group discussion that focuses on identifying technical/business milestones to achieve by the next session. In addition, each student will be assigned to a CDL Fellow or Associate (individuals who mentor CDL companies - this list includes Col. Chris Hadfield, the founders of WIND Mobile, KIK, and Kobo) and will become their shadow for the day.
There are five session dates each with forty seats reserved for female students:
October 24-25, 2018
December 12-13, 2018
February 20-21, 2018
May 1-2, 2018
June 12-13, 2018
If students are unavailable to participate for the first session there will be four other opportunities during the year in which they can select in the application to be considered for.
The application and logistical details can be found in the following link: https://form.jotform.com/82496250466261
The deadline to apply is October 9, 2018 11:59PM EST. Since the launch of this program last year, we have had over 100 students attend from across York Region, Peel Region, Toronto, and the GTA.
Here are three articles written by our past students about their experience in the program:

Shad Valley - Summer 2018
SHAD is a lifelong experience and begins with our month-long summer program, which will show you what you can achieve if you think big and pursue your extraordinary potential.
Each year, top-performing Grades 10, 11 and 12 students (Secondaire IV, V, or CEGEP 1 in Quebec) or the international equivalent, compete for a place in the month-long program, which is focused on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts & math) disciplines. Approximately 900 students are accepted annually to participate and live in-residence on one of our host university campuses across Canada during the July program.
“SHAD is a time in your life when anything you think of can become a reality. I really believe if you go through high school without SHAD, you’re not getting the complete experience. It’s that essential. You have to go!” - Bruce Gao, SHAD '12
SHAD provides the unique opportunity to explore a university campus while still in high school, and experience higher learning in a supportive yet challenging environment. Included are lectures, seminars and workshops, presentations by industry leaders, working in teams to simulate a ‘startup’ project, and recreational activities. Meanwhile, parents can rest assured that SHAD works intensively with our university campus partners to ensure student safety, well-being, and access to needed services.
The SHAD Entrepreneurship Challenge is part of the program: teams of participants will collaborate, innovate and create a product or service by applying scientific principles, engineering a prototype, and developing business and marketing plans. A winning team is selected at each campus to polish off their projects for the SHAD - John Dobson Entrepreneurship Cup held each fall. Take a look at last year's SHAD Cup in Pictures.
SHAD participants are also eligible for a volunteer summer internship for the month of August, immediately following the July in-residence university program.
The Application is extensive, and is due November 20, 2017. For more info, visit https://www.shad.ca/Apply.htm.

Global Engineering Conference
The sixth annual Global Engineering Conference is to be held on Saturday March 11th, 2017 at the McMaster Innovations Park.
The Global Engineering Conference 2017 features: Engineering a Healthier World. Since engineering is an interdisciplinary field that has a vital impact on several fields including healthcare, our conference will be themed around a central question:
How is engineering facilitating innovation within the healthcare field?
Through this interdisciplinary event, we hope to encourage our delegates to collaborate and reflect on how engineering can address the dynamic and growing healthcare needs that our society faces. It is critical that engineers and healthcare professionals work together to provide innovative solutions for current and long term medical needs. Our conference will provide the avenue to do just that.
The McMaster University Chapter of Engineers Without Borders is arranging this conference to provide a wide range of workshops, presentations and a panelist discussion to explore issues and developments with engineering and healthcare fields.
For additional information, please visit our website at: www.gecmcmaster.com.
You can also check out our Facebook event page where we will be constantly posting updates: https://www.facebook.com/events/1843725869236541/.
