There is a brand new research prize for first year students offered by the Department of Physics & Astronomy at McMaster University. Current Gr. 12 students who are interested in applying to the Chemical and Physical Science I program (formally Physical Sciences I) and considering an Honours program in the Physics Department can apply.

What is it:
The prize is a paid research position in the Department of Physics & Astronomy working under the supervision of a faculty member. In the summer (2016) after their first year of university, the prizewinner will work full time for 16 weeks in a research laboratory or theoretical group. The nominal value of the prize is $6200 plus an early start on their research career!

Applications are open now and will remain open until January 31st. Students interested in applying are asked to submit an essay describing a project related to physics, astronomy or biophysics that they have been involved in, and how it has shaped their interest in physics and astronomy. Possible examples are a science fair project, culminating task, lab experiment, volunteer position, special interest, lecture or event, club or competition, co-op placement. The essay must be 500 words or less. Applicants will be judged on their written responses and entrance average. Grades submitted with their program application will be used.

The online application website can be accessed through www.physics.mcmaster.ca and clicking on the link "Chemical and Physical Sciences Entrance Prize in Research", you can also access it directly here. If you are interested, get a team together and bring me the $40, and I'll sign you up.

JWA Student Design Competition

The JWA Student Design Competition was started in 2011 to inspire and help students interested in architectural design to excel. About to enter into our 4th year, we are so lucky to have had the opportunity to mentor so many students in Oakville with a passion for design. Each year students that are interested are given a detailed and challenging architectural project to design in a competition individually. The design outlines range from Baseball announcement booths, to skating rinks, to modern town gathering spaces, but no matter the outline or requirements the idea is to give the opportunity to high school students getting ready to apply for university or college a taste of the industry.

We have had several students go on successfully to design and architectural schools after competing in SDC and we hope to continue helping students to succeed.

OSSTF Student Achievement Awards

The Student Achievement Awards is a writing and creative arts competition which is open to all public secondary school students in Ontario. The competition is meant to encourage the intellectual development of our students and an interest in society. The 1984 Provincial Assembly established the awards in honour of Marion Drysdale, a secretary at OSSTF/FEESO Provincial Office for twenty-two years, for her dedicated work over so many years. Each year a new theme is determined by the Member Education Sub-Committee of the Communications/Political Action Committee. OSSTF/FEESO invites student writers and artists to submit creative work exploring this year’s theme: Transforming Character(s). Judging will be held at the school, District, Regional and Provincial levels. Eight provincial winners will be awarded $1000 each in prizes and will be invited to our Annual General Meeting in March where a video showcasing their work will be screened.
