What is Scientifically Yours?

Scientifically Yours is a two day residential workshop designed to encourage young people to continue their studies in the sciences and to pursue careers in science-related fields. Scientifically Yours provides an opportunity for students to learn more about science in a university setting.

What will I learn from the workshop?

You will learn about career opportunities from professionals who have careers in the sciences, including medicine, university research, and industry. Everyone will participate in six science and mathematics projects. Through the projects, you will get hands-on laboratory experience. The two-day event also includes a plenary lecture by a distinguished scientist, recreational activities, networking, and an opportunity to dine with a number of professional scientists. The workshops will be conducted with the assistance of Brock University student mentors, staff and faculty members.

DX Canadian High School Design Competition

Design Exchange is proud to announce the 20th Annual DX Canadian High School Design Competition. This competition promotes the study and awareness of all design disciplines in schools across Canada and is open to all high school students at junior (grades 9 and 10) and senior (grades 11 and 12) levels.

Prizes are awarded at both levels in five categories:

• Industrial Design
• Fashion Design
• Costume Design
• Architecture/Interior Design
• Graphic Design

We live in the midst of change: technological change, social change, political change, environmental change. In modern times humankind has experienced an unprecedented rapidity of change. How do we adapt, or not adapt... and what are the consequences? Students will consider the perspectives of scientists, engineers, writers, and philosophers, as they examine the dynamics of "Change".

Inspiring Future Women in Science conference

Perimeter Institute (in Waterloo, Ontario) is hosting its third Inspiring Future Women in Science conference on Friday April 15, 2016 from 9:00 am – noon. The conference is aimed at bringing together like minded young women currently in high school with a strong interest in pursuing science as a career path.

The conference is tailored to giving female high school students an opportunity to interact with STEM professions through keynotes, panel discussions and mentoring.

U of T High School Design Competition

Registration is officially open for our biggest and best event of the year: the 2015 University of Toronto High School Design Competition! The competition will be held on Saturday November 28th, 2015, in the Bahen Centre for Information Technology (40 St George St), from 8:20 – 5:30pm on University of Toronto Campus!

Below are the details for the 2015 Competition, we've changed a few things since last year.

The competition is open this year to students Grades 9-12, in teams of four. (Grades 9/10s will compete against each other, vice versa for 11/12s).Teams of four will get the challenge briefing & design package one week in advance. Students will use that time to buy their materials, and come up with a design plan for when they actually get to build at the competition on November 28th. Spending limit is capped at $50CAD, which we will reimburse each team for after the competition. (Provided they bring their receipts! Materials must be brought to the competition unassembled). The design challenge this year was created by current engineering students, for potential future engineering students: we've even snuck in some concepts from our first year engineering design courses, to give students a sneak preview into concepts learned in actual engineering school!Participants will learn the basics of Python in one hour, during a fun workshop - no prior experience necessary. Students can scope out U of T Engineering's best clubs at our Opportunities Exhibition during lunch!Enjoy a keynote speech on the life an times of Engineering Design, from an acclaimed U of T Engineering Professor. Get Mentored by our all-star team of current U of T Engineering Student mentors, from a wide range of engineering disciplines. The ESU team has been working very hard planning the 2016 program sessions and we can`t wait for you and your students to join us on campus for our most exciting year yet!
We`ve added new courses and have an exciting new extra-curricular activity schedule for all residence-option students to rotate through.
We will still be hosting the Welcome Rally and Fun Fair, and we encourage all commuter-option students to join us for these annual favorites.  A few important reminders for you and your students:

Shad Valley Summer Program

The SHAD experience is a lifelong experience and begins with our month-long summer program, which will show you what you can achieve if you think big and pursue your extraordinary potential.

Each year, top-performing Grades 10, 11 and 12 students (Secondaire IV, V, or CEGEP 1 in Quebec) or the international equivalent, compete for a place in the month-long program, which is focused on STEM (science, technology, engineering & math) disciplines. More than 600 students are accepted annually to participate and live in-residence on one of our host university campuses across Canada during the July program.

SHAD provides the unique opportunity to explore a university campus while still in high school, and experience higher learning in a supportive yet challenging environment. Included are lectures, seminars and workshops, presentations by industry leaders, working in teams to simulate a ‘startup’ project, and recreational activities.

The SHAD Entrepreneurship Challenge is a highlight of the program: teams of participants work together to develop a solution to a big problem by applying scientific principles to develop engineering, design and entrepreneurship projects. You will create a real life product or service, conducting market surveys, creating business plans and even engineering working prototypes. The challenge culminates in awarding of the SHAD - John Dobson Entrepreneurship Cup recognizing the top project developed during the program.

SHAD participants are also eligible for a summer volunteer internship for the month of August, immediately following the July in-residence university program.

Students who are offered a place in the program are well-rounded, emerging leaders who demonstrate their initiative, creativity and entrepreneurial flair even before attending the program. Most are high academic achievers and are also participating in extra-curricular activities. There is no cost to apply, and any student interested in participating is encouraged to submit an application. Opportunities are available for those with proven financial need, eliminating barriers to participation.
