Shad Valley Summer Program

The SHAD experience is a lifelong experience and begins with our month-long summer program, which will show you what you can achieve if you think big and pursue your extraordinary potential.

Each year, top-performing Grades 10, 11 and 12 students (Secondaire IV, V, or CEGEP 1 in Quebec) or the international equivalent, compete for a place in the month-long program, which is focused on STEM (science, technology, engineering & math) disciplines. More than 600 students are accepted annually to participate and live in-residence on one of our host university campuses across Canada during the July program.

SHAD provides the unique opportunity to explore a university campus while still in high school, and experience higher learning in a supportive yet challenging environment. Included are lectures, seminars and workshops, presentations by industry leaders, working in teams to simulate a ‘startup’ project, and recreational activities.

The SHAD Entrepreneurship Challenge is a highlight of the program: teams of participants work together to develop a solution to a big problem by applying scientific principles to develop engineering, design and entrepreneurship projects. You will create a real life product or service, conducting market surveys, creating business plans and even engineering working prototypes. The challenge culminates in awarding of the SHAD - John Dobson Entrepreneurship Cup recognizing the top project developed during the program.

SHAD participants are also eligible for a summer volunteer internship for the month of August, immediately following the July in-residence university program.

Students who are offered a place in the program are well-rounded, emerging leaders who demonstrate their initiative, creativity and entrepreneurial flair even before attending the program. Most are high academic achievers and are also participating in extra-curricular activities. There is no cost to apply, and any student interested in participating is encouraged to submit an application. Opportunities are available for those with proven financial need, eliminating barriers to participation.

TEDxYouth@Toronto

TEDxYouth@Toronto is:

• a must for any high school student interested in innovative ideas
• the largest TEDxYouth event in Toronto, with over 250 attendees from the GTA
• a hot spot for Toronto’s curious high school students to spark discussions about “ideas worth spreading”.

Expect an immersive, pre-university experience focused on exploring cutting-edge research discoveries with professors, and the chance to engage with current student researchers. Also included: an introduction to the art and science of reading academic papers.

Grade 11 Program | "Design" Theme | Monday, March 14 - Friday, March 18, 2016. Dates may coincide with some school boards' March Break Application deadline: December 16th , 2015

From engineering and the environment to science fiction and virtual reality, students will spend a week exploring the theme of design with a community of like-minded peers.

Grade 10 Program | "Change" Theme | Sunday, May 15 - Thursday, May 19, 2016 Application deadline: March 9th , 2016

We live in the midst of change: technological change, social change, political change, environmental change. In modern times humankind has experienced an unprecedented rapidity of change. How do we adapt, or not adapt... and what are the consequences? Students will consider the perspectives of scientists, engineers, writers, and philosophers, as they examine the dynamics of "Change".
Program fee, includes all meals: $500. Supervised overnight shared residence accommodation: $160

Zero to Startup

Starting on September 19, 2015, the Brookfield Institute at Ryerson University and Celestica are proud to offer the ZerotoStartup (Z2S) program, an initiative that provides young people between the ages of 12 to 17 with an experiential foundation in technology and exposure to entrepreneurship. The inaugural cohort is 75% filled, so we're encouraging applicants to apply as soon as possible.

Partial scholarships are also available, based on the merit of the application and financial need.

The ZerotoStartup program aims to provide participants with the skills and techniques to prepare them for a changing world and an increasingly technology-based future. Held every Saturday for 13 weeks, at the Centre for Social Innovation at Queen and Spadina, the program will offer training in robotics, web design, 3D printing, design thinking, startup experience, and personal branding, all the while providing access to industry mentors and experts. McMaster University Public Lecture on Light Microscopy

Interested in science? Want to learn more about light?
Come to McMaster University's public lecture on light microscopy, which uses light and lenses to magnify an object that can't be seen with the naked eye. Light microscopes work a lot like telescopes, except that objects are small and close to the lens rather than far away.

This free event will explore the early history of light microscopy to the 2014 Nobel prize in chemistry for super-resolved fluorescence microscopy. The lecture also marks the UNESCO International Year of Light.

McMaster Engineering Physics High School Internship

The Department of Engineering Physics at McMaster is pleased to offer up to two paid summer internships for high school students completing Grade 10 or 11 in June 2015. Each six-week internship will be supervised by one of McMaster’s Engineering Physics faculty members in the following areas of research:

• Photovoltaics
• Nuclear Engineering
• Biomedical Engineering

Who Can Apply?

Any high school student completing Grade 10 or 11 in June 2015, who is interested in science and technology and in exploring Engineering Physics as an academic discipline for university-level study.

When?

The application deadline is May 31st, 2015; 11:59pm EST.

Scholarship Value

This is an extraordinary training and learning opportunity and the trainees will be compensated $2250 for the 6-week internship.

How to Apply?

The application process involves filling the Summer Internship Application and submitting a two minute video on Vimeo.  In the video, you (the applicant) must:

• Demonstrate an experiment that explains a physics concept you have learnt in school or encountered in real-life.
• Choose an experiment that can be safely performed.
• Verbally explain the physics behind the observations.
• Explain why you would be a suitable candidate for an Engineering Physics Internship at McMaster.
• Video Submission and User Engagement
• Once the video is submitted to Vimeo, the link must be included in the online application form.

The submitted videos will be hosted on the Department of Engineering Physics website and will go through a 2-week public voting period during the first two weeks of June. Your application will be judged based on your ability in engaging the public, so please encourage people in your network to view and vote for the top videos.
